The Jewel Ornament shop was the first home of the Kampo Gangra Drubgyud Ling established by one of the top Tibetan Buddhist scholars alive (bar none) Ven. Karma Thinley Rinpoche in 1973, so it predates Tashi-la's tenure there. The shop was founded by Beverley Webster, who left Toronto to become Chogyam Trungpa's executive secretary.
Tashi was my neighbour and a great guy, whenever I walked around with him, he knew so many people from Rosedale types to street people.
Tashi had an awesome sense of humour, usually a good sign.

I composed the original music for Vajra Sky Over Tibet and a number of other Dharma films, including "Travellers and Magicians" by Khyentse Norbu (Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoché). I collaborated with His Holiness, giving a concert after his talk the evening he won the Nobel Peace Prize. I have heard His Holiness in person several times the past year speak with incredible force and almost despair about how terrible the situation is in Tibet. In Paris a few weeks ago, he urged people to visit Tibet, to see for themselves if the people are happy, as the Chinese government claims, or suffering as badly as is reported --with great difficulty-- by the Tibetans themselves. He specifically asked US ALL to help Tibet in any way we can-- to fly the Tibetan flag, for example. He recounted an amazing story, how on his visit to Beijing to meet Mao Tse Tung in the 1950s, Mao asked him if the Tibetans had a flaag. His Holiness said, in telling us the story, that he wasn't sure what to say... but then Mao said that Tibet should have its own flag. So His Holiness likes to say that it is Chairman Mao himself who asked that the Tibetan flag be shown.
Namaste,
David Hykes

I am the filmmaker of VAJRA SKY OVER TIBET. This is an earlier version of my film. The wide-screen final version is available on dvd at www.directpictures.com, distributed by PBS. Things have only gotten worse for the Buddhist sangha of Tibet since I made this film, which makes the story it tells even more important today.

"I wish this film every success." THE DALAI LAMA

"An illuminating meditation, beautifully shot in Tibet's most sacred sites...the peaceful principles of the faith infuse every frame." VARIETY

"Not only is Vajra Sky Over Tibet the best documentary of the year, it is also one of the finest films ever made about religion" FILM THREAT
